Blog » And he ate the Bueno

The pharmacist looked at him, and briefly glanced at me. It must have seemed strange that a diabetic was picking his way through the selection of chocolates.
The pharmacy was an all-white affair with wall-to-wall shelving trying to get you to buy the latest revitalising shampoo and Danone’s excuse for tasteless yoghurt. Chocolates, sweets and crisps weren’t hard to find in here either. Strange, a place so concerned with maintaining the health of its customers, that it would sell luxuries such as chocolate.
The pharmacist had just disappeared into the depths of that mystical back room where all the drugs, chemicals and medicines were stored. Walking back behind the counter, the pharmacist noticed that my friend had picked up some chocolate. He only came in for some needles. We’d just had coffee at Caffé Nero and I suppose he fancied a bit of sugar.
“You shouldn’t really be eating chocolate if you’re a diabetic,” he said.
I looked away. It boggles me, and my friend, how little people understand about the condition. I looked to the shadows beneath the shelves of athlete’s-foot cream for solace and to avoid laughing at his witty retorts.
My friend replied, “I’m low anyway.”
With a gasp he opened the wrapper (a bar of Kinder Bueno) in front of my friend and proffered him a bite. “Have some now,” the pharmacist eagerly stated.
So he shrugged, reached forward, and took a piece of Bueno to eat.
